Melides distances itself from the limitations of a conventional label or definition. It is not a conventional dwelling place, but a residential concept with community values and intentional design principles at its very core. To be in the space is to contribute to it and to foster the collaborative efforts of the most talented living artists.

With a focus on maximizing the potential of interior space and the exterior environment, Melides sets itself apart from traditional notions of seaside residences. Anyone who interacts with the space can enjoy its natural light, ergonomic furniture and feel inspired by its design. We are offering individuals and collectives the opportunity to contribute art to this space and transform it.

The location of Melides is deliberate. It is close to the beach view, to the feel of the sea breeze, to the sounds of waves and to the smell of flowering trees. Melides stimulates the senses so that from waking to sleeping, occupiers benefit from a multisensory experience. The slow pace of rural life in Melides is reflected in the design of the studios to create an atmosphere of ultimate comfort and calm.

Curator, designer, or artist, whatever your practice, there is room for you at Melides to join a vibrant collective of like-minded creatives and talents set against the backdrop of unspoiled coast.

Each residence is individually designed by a select list of architects whose aim aligns with the ethos of the community project – to encourage creativity.

In addition to offering a unique contemporary living space, each residence will be multifunctional and act as a studio, workshop or gallery area, which will function like the live pulsating cells of an integrated body which, in the holistic sense, is the art institution itself.

Melides offers more than a contemporary dwelling place. It allows each residence to push the boundaries of functionality so that spaces can adapt according to the needs of the user.

As the fundamental concept of Melides Art is transformation, the key objective is to always involve the artist at every stage from conceptualisation and development to completion. This method of collaboration with artists becomes an ecosystem in itself, resonating with the natural structure of the Alentejo coastal region.

Artists are invited to work with local artisans known for their specific craft and native knowledge so the project will develop in tune with the culture and materials indigenous to the environment.

Thurstan’s careful curation combines an expertise in design with a passion for sourcing antiques and the creation of bespoke furniture. This shapes eclectic and original interiors true to the client and in keeping with the original architecture and surroundings, equally suited to both residential projects and the hospitality industry.

As former European Design Director at Soho House, Thurstan worked across houses in Istanbul, Miami, Barcelona and London, leading with a strong focus on comfort, practicality, and consideration for the origins and history of a building. His background and experience, living and working in LA, New York, London, Hong Kong and Barcelona, has honed the Thurstan aesthetic and informs individual projects from the social and cultural to private residences.
